Messages From The Land is a series of letters from our team featuring stories and reflections about their time with the land.

These intimate glimpses into life at Shelterwood are shared with monthly donors throughout the year, bringing you into closer relationship with the forest you help us steward.

community reflections

  • “The Shelterwood Collective is a fierce embodiment of truth seeking, healing and joy-filled intergenerational community engagement rooted in climate resilient land stewardship. They neither shy away from nor sugar coat the arduous task of leaning into the contradictions of doing decolonial work on stolen land. Generously sharing their learnings along the way and hosting aligned organizations in the sanctuary of forest ecosystems they're restoring, Shelterwood's contributions of strengthening the land justice movement and creating a model 900 acre climate resilience zone are immeasurable.”

Rachel Bagby, Landing Justice Lead, Wend Collective

  • "The land is lush and peaceful. I fell asleep listening to the frogs and woke up to the wild turkeys and birds. I’m grateful for spaces like this to dream and actually rest. I’ve dreamt of places like this for years. A space where BIPOC disabled and queer people can exist and thrive. A cabin that is fully accessible is honestly the ultimate dream. I can’t wait to come back and share more about the work that is being done here."

Rosemary McDonnell-Horita, Disability Advocate and Access Doula

  • “I’m so grateful to be in this practice of coming home into ourselves. It’s the violence of colonialism that keeps us apart and when I touch the ground here at Shelterwood, it’s the safest I’ve ever felt in nature.”
